Open the south gate and step one foot into Skidaway Farms and you will tread on the pathway named for Dr. Charley Caldwell. Yes, he was Blake’s father…and Skidaway Farms benefactor, Nancy Dancu’s husband…a surgeon trained at Harvard who cherished the hours he got to spend cultivating his orchards and tending the vegetables on the family farm in Danville, Kentucky. Doc Charley passed on in January 1999 but his memory is now marked at the Farm by the wide boulevard that leads to Valley Crest Square. The Caldwell men had been farmers as far back as anyone could remember…planting nut […]

Pat Morris grew up on the Isle of Hope….a stone’s throw across the Skidaway Narrows from her plot at Skidaway Farms. Her parents, Hugh and Betsy Jackson raised their family on the three acres they lovingly landscaped at Wymberley Point…the spot that Pat remembers was the birthplace of her love for gardening. “My parents loved to garden…to see things grow. My mother was one of the founders of the Wymberley Garden Club in 1952…she wanted everyone to enjoy gardening as much as she did”, Pat said. “Now it’s my job to hand that love for growing plants down to my […]
There was no question in Tom Davis’ mind that his wife, Dorothy, was the more meticulous gardener between the two of them. Dotty Davis has been an avid gardener since she and Tom became home owners…54 years ago…and she is still the self-proclaimed “visual gardener” in the family. “Tom’s style is more English-garden while I’m the cut-and-trim type”, Dotty said, “We are polar-opposites about our gardening but that’s what makes us a good team!” (That comment is what prompted our picture-homage to the “green acres” couple!) Stroll past the Davis’ plots at the Farm and the clean rows of plants […]
The outstanding work of Bethesda Barn Builders is present throughout the Farm. All the benches …and soon-to-be-built picnic tables… were handcrafted by this talented band of volunteer carpenters. Landings resident, Bo Wolf manages these 14 men and coordinates the myriad of requests they receive for projects in Savannah. Our Southern Pine benches were designed especially for the Farm. Check out the dedication plaques on each one – some are in honor of a present Farmer and others are in memory of a loved one who has passed on. Bethesda Barn Builders felt it was time to dedicate a permanent memorial […]
(for the TWATL June 2011) Mike Shulman, owner of GrassMaster Lawn Care, Inc. is committed to giving-back to the folks who live on Skidaway Island. His generous donation to Skidaway Farms lent itself to the naming of GrassMaster Lane as one of the walkways nestled amongst the garden plots. Donations such as this one continue to help Skidaway Farms pay-down its construction loan debt. Mike started GrassMaster 15 years ago on the weekends while working as a pipe-fitter. He now has seven fulltime crews and just purchased a new spray truck to add to his fleet of lawn-care trucks. GrassMaster […]
