The well pump is up to speed Maintenance Coordinator, Ralph Hinz, was repairing the Solar Sync device on our well when he noticed that the circuits to the pump and the controller were in need of attention. Lucky for the Farm, Ralph’s son, Keith is a licensed electrician who came out yesterday and worked with his father and his nephew, Dorian to remedy the situation! The pump is the heart of the Farm…without it, not much vegetation would last very long. So it was a welcomed effort by the Hinz guys to get our pump’s electrical circuits up to code! […]
Delicious! Farmers keen on planning their Fall crop met at the Farm this past Sunday to hear options for soil preparation and amendments; what and how much to plant and the recommended ways to control or destroy those unwanted pests that tend to enjoy the Farm as much as we all do. Education Coordinators, Jane Kollmann and Joe Tyson were on hand to lead the group through their questions and provided much appreciated answers to how best to Farm on Skidaway Island. Beekeeper, Barbara Phillips wowed the crowd with honey from her European honey Bees that live in the northwest […]
The Skidaway Audubon Pavilion Construction fundraising committee helped to organize the buffet dinner at the Farm this past Sunday. Farmers… and many friends… came to enjoy the good food and camaraderie! After dinner, a silent auction was held to help fundraise for the pavilion construction fund. A good time was had by all! The evening was a success! Thank you to all who helped organize this event!

Check out beekeeper, Barbara Philips’ info list on European Honey Bees – click on the “education” tab to select. The bees at the Farm sometimes get a bum rap because of the nastier habits of the wasps and yellow jackets nearby…but our Honey Bees are anything but malevolent! Read about them in Barbara’s report or contact her for more information at bphilmd@yahoo.com
Unwanted insects arrive at the Farm Squash Borers and Kudzu Bugs have been spotted at the Farm in the past few days. Protect your squash/zucchini/pumpkin vines against this dreaded vine borer. Cucumbers are lest affected. The Kudzu Bug kills your legumes/beans/peas by eating the vines (not the legumes themselves) and the whole plant withers and dies. Check out the pictures of these insects and the eggs they lay – and other insects as well – under the “Education” tab…Insects Seen at the Farm. One of the best ways to keep a bug infestation from your plot is to clear out the weeds picked and […]

Early this morning, the Farm’s Maintenance Coordinator, Ralph Hinz and assistant, Tom Kollmann made their way through the fog out to the Farm to repair the broken hose bib. Once that was in-hand, they were able to turn the well pump back on…so now the flow of water has returned inside the Farm. Those of you in Sections E,F,G should check your plots as they were not watered overnight (actually early in the morning is when the overhead system normally runs) because the pump was off. After that, Hinz and Kollmann turned their tools and attention to a wheelbarrow whose tires were in need […]
Education Coordinator, Jane Kollmann’s troops have returned to the Farm! The Children’s Garden program started the Spring Season this past Saturday. Check out their hard work ….and action… and FUN under the tab above:”Children’s Garden- Opening Day”. Thanks to Jane and her ever-loyal helpers, Paul Pittsford and Carol Stiles, for such great work with these little farmers!
Those of you who may have seen the bees forming rather large swarms this past week just outside the fence near the irrigation pump have been witness to the expansion process healthy communities of honeybees go through. When their hive population gets too large for the hive itself, a new queen is born and she takes lots of her loyal folowers off to form a new hive somewhere else. During this process, the bees are not aggressive towards us humans…in fact they could care less about us as they are satiated with honey and have other things on their mind! […]
