Ring in the New Year with a plot at the Farm

(for the TLA December Journal by Kathy Hardigan)

Becoming a Farmer may just be that New Year’s resolution you have been looking for!  What better way to improve what you eat than to grow your own fruits and vegetables…your own cornucopia of healthy things to serve your family for dinner!

After a very successful first year, Skidaway Farms is preparing for 2012 by offering a new online registration system.  Starting December 1st, you can sign up for a plot or a raised bed by following the step-by-step instructions at www.skidawayfarms.net where you can pay with a credit card or PayPal account.  The fees are the same as last year:

Capital Contribution           $  50  ( a one-time fee per plot)

Annual Plot Rental              $100

Annual Raised Bed Rental    $ 250

The Farm has close to two dozen open plots for the New Year beginning February 1, 2012.  The Raised Beds each have a drip watering system that can be individually timed.  Overhead watering provides the irrigation for all other plots at the Farm.  Several Farmers have opted to install individual drip systems in their plots including most of the Organic Farmers.

The Farm will assign new Farmers their plot number after the registration deadline on January 6, 2012.  Current Farmers will be able to renew and keep their existing plot.  Once
you become a Farmer, you can keep the same plot year-to-year or ask to move to an open plot if one is available.  Each Farmer is limited to renting two plots per year.

If you have any questions or trouble with online registration email us at membership@skidawayfarms.net

Skidaway Farms has grown into a solid community of folks who enjoy being outdoors, growing plants and vegetables and getting to know other Skidaway Island residents who share
the same interests.  Not a day goes by at the Farm that someone doesn’t have a friendly chat with a fellow Farmer who is willing to share some know-how on their latest crop or soil improvement!

If you haven’t been to the Farm, come on over and visit!  We are just a hoot n’ a holler away …off McWhorter Road.  Directions are on our website www.skidawayfarms.net

The Children’s Garden at the Farm

The Governance Committee is pleased to announce that Landings resident, Jane Kollmann has been selected to become our Children’s Program Coordinator.  Attracted by the weather and the longer growing season, Jane and her husband, Tom moved to the Landings from Minnesota a year ago.  They tend to their two plots at the Farm as well as the Flower Garden in Section D.

Jane has been prepping the four plots that make up the Children’s garden, building a brick perimeter and covering the space with hay to winter over the soil.  She is busy preparing the curriculum that will attract and inspire children ages 6-12 years old to plant and tend to their own garden at the Farm.

The Children’s season will begin in February and run for 10 weeks.  Children and their parents will meet at the Farm on Saturday mornings and one afternoon during the week.  Look
for the announcement flyer on our website and on our bulletin board inside the Farm!  Email Jane at children@skidawayfarms.net for more information.
