Help for Your Garden

(for the TWATL Sept.23, 2011)

On Saturday October 1st at 10 AM, Skidaway Farms is hosting a session on soil microbiology at the Skidaway Methodist Church.  All are welcome to this free event – just register that you are attending at www.skidawayfarms.net.

The Farms’ Organic Coordinator, Janet Waldie, has invited known expert, Peter Hartel to speak on soil improvement as it pertains to organic gardening. Hartel was a Professor of Environmental Ethics for Georgia Power as well as a Professor of Soil Microbiology in the Department of Crop & Soil Sciences at the University of Georgia. Now a Professor Emeritus, Hartel helped start UGA’s Certificate Program in Organic Agriculture and was responsible for teaching Introductory Organic Farming before he retired in July 2011.  He continues to write and has just completed a chapter, “The Soil Ecosystem”, for the upcoming edition of the “Georgia Master Gardener’s Handbook”.

Prof. Hartel will cover a range of topics with a special focus on Skidaway Farms’ soil (he has already conducted several soil tests.)  There will be a Q&A session and an on-site consultation at Skidaway Farms after the session.  Register at www.skidawayfarms.net  and then bring your questions for Professor Hartel!
