Skidaway Farms Adds More Raised Beds

(for the TWATL August 2011)

The folks who farm in the Raised Bed plots love the convenience of being able to sit on the wide pine-sideboards and till their plants.  No spot in their bed can’t be reached by doing this.  It’s a comfortable way to till and weed…the civilized method to farm while not sacrificing your back!

Given the success of these beds, the Farm thought it was high time to build a few more of these wooden wonders.  Duke’s Custom Construction was called in to build the nine new beds.  Duke’s has been affiliated with the Farm from its beginning….they were the folks who built the double-fence to keep the deer out of the Farm as well as the original 11 Raised Beds.  Built of weather-treated pine with perimeters supported underneath by six-inch fence posts, these beds are solid as a rock.  Not only can you sit comfortably on the sideboards, you could dance on them as well…testimony to Duke’s design and carpentry skills!

All the Raised Beds at the Farm will have the added convenience of their own drip system so each Farmer can direct the watering to specific plants.   If you’d like to rent a Raised Bed, contact Janet Waldie at membership@skidawayfarms.net asap.  Four of the new beds are already rented out so act quickly…these Raised Beds are very popular!
